How it is revealing and limiting
Another Jamaican folktale that is both limiting and revealing is "Anansi, White-Belly, and Fish." One way that it is revealing is because of how the white-belly and the fish show hospitality to Anansi like Jamaicans show hospitality to their friends and relatives; as hospitality is a big part of their culture. For example, the white-belly showed hospitality to Anansi by giving him wings to let him go and feed on the trees, and the fish showed Anansi great hospitality after "proving" that he was their "cousin." Another way it is revealing is because it "tells" the story of why humans eat fish, and food is a big part of Jamaican culture. For example, when the fish rowed Anansi to shore, Anansi put them in a bag to take home to eat, and this is why people eat fish today. This story is limiting because Jamaicans work hard for food, but Anansi only gets his food by tricking people or other animals. For example, Anansi asked the mother fish to put his bed in the kitchen where the eggs were, but after the mother fish left, he ate all the eggs except one and tricked the mother fish in the morning when she wanted to count them to make sure they were all there. "Anansi, White-Belly, and Fish" includes more revealing factors, but is limiting in its details.
